Besides garlic or mineral oil and going to the store, what can I do? I have a major head cold and the sinus pressure is causing terrible ear pain in my right ear and its affecting my eating since it hurts to swallow. Is there anything that provides INSTANT relief I can find at home?
Try a warm compress on your ear. Lie down with the infected ear facing up, and hold the warm compress on the ear. Try to sleep with your bad ear facing up, if possible, because it can help with the drainage. And take some Tylenol or Motrin to help with the pain and inflammation.
You can also try a decongestant to see if that helps.
Hope you feel better!

What can I do for my earache just to ease the pain before I go to the doctor ?
People used to slightly heat some oil, put the oil in their ear and close the ear with a cotton ball. I believe the theory was that the warm oil would make them more comfortable. The cotton ball would prevent cool air from adding to the discomfort. Of course, you'd want to test the heat of the oil on your inner wrist. Burning the inside of your ear with hot oil would not be a good experience! I've seen both baby oil (mineral oil) and olive oil used this way.
Of course, the best thing to do is go see the doctor. An ear infection is a serious thing and may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Do you know of anything around the house that may relieve an earache in an adult...please?
A doctor in the ER once told me to put a few drops of warmed up hydrogen peroxide. That it would eat up and dry up the wax or mucus in the ear. Being as it was my son just 5 at the time I never really tried it but it makes sense that it would work.
I would warm it up a little and use a medicine dropper if you have one to do so. Otherwise maybe a straw would work if you put some in a glass and put your finger on the top of the straw to form suction. But if it's cold you will FEEL it and it won't be comfortable. Not too hot either just lukewarm. Good luck. Use the normal hydrogen peroxide and just a couple of drops.
Don't put cotton as it will only heat up the ear and make the infection worse. Better to just lie down on the opposite ear.
BLOW your nose gently if you have a cold...blowing too hard causes the mucus to go into the EAR canal. You can try wam and cool compresses too which open and close the blood vessels in the area...not sure if it will help but it did me when my glands were all puffed up! :~)
My 8-year-old son has an ear infection and a fever of 101. He complains of earache about once or twice a year and I have always just given him Tylenol for the pain and the problem just clears up on its own, but he starts to cry from the pain after two or three hours and the Tylenol directions say to give it no more that once every 4 hours. I feel so bad when he's in pain. I wish I could just make the pain go away. His doctor prescribed an antibiotic, but I would rather try something natural if it works just as well.
Several things: I use mullein/garlic/warmed olive oil for earaches. Usually this works very, very well. You can buy ear oil or mullein/garlic/olive oil ready made, or you can make your own. E-mail me for directions on how to make your own if you like. It's super easy. Some families have excellent luck with adding ear candling. Some are highly sceptical and do not even want to try this modality. I ABSOLUTELY agree that recurrent ear infections are usually a sign of dairy or wheat allergy, and I did know one little boy who was allergic to apple juice, that staff of life for kids, so don't rule this out! I urge you not to go the allopathic antibiotic route, as this will indiscriminately kill all the bacteria in your child's gut, both bad AND good. And this can cause dysbiosis which will further imbalance him and can take years to rectify. Eliminate dairy, especially full fat dairy. Some kids eat bagels w/ cream cheese, cereal w/ milk, milk and pizza for lunch w/ ice cream for dessert, and even more meat and full fat dairy for dinner (as in enchiladas and lasagne and more pizza and burgers for dinner). If these are some of his biggest sources of calories, go to cultured dairy like kefir and yogurt. Quit the sugars as this feeds the bacteria and acidifies the blood and makes it worse.
I've had luck w/ giving kids "green water" to drink. Go to the healthfood store and buy either liquid alfalfa or Kyo-green by Wakunaga and follow the package directions, halving the dose for young children. You may also find that by adding lots of warming spices to your child's food, like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, mace, allspice, a bit of cayenne if he'll take it (and for some kids, that's a big if...), chai w/ soymilk, that this helps break up mucous in his body and gets rid of the cause of the ear infections once and for all. As we're coming into the autumn soon, give him things like oatmeal w/ cinnamon and raisins or nuts (if he likes and can have those things), mulled cider, spiced, warmed pear juice if indeed he seems sensitive to the apple products, warmed spiced pear sauce w/ granola for dessert, sweet potatoes or yams w/ garlic and a bit of curry as a side dish, etc. etc. Give him tons of greens and veggies in his diet w/ lots of garlic. My kids eat something green every single day of their lives. Mom insists. I make a curried tuna salad and a curried chicken salad to get lean protein and a bit of those warming spices into my children, but this is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, especially kids.
In hydrotherapy, alternate applications of hot and cold compresses would be given to get things moving and to break up the pain. You may want to try a hot water bottle or a heating pad, however. We have a little pad that has magnets in it and can be heated up in the microwave. This helps immensely. I also use that same warmed mullein garlic oil to massage around the ear, especially behind it and down to try to get the lymph moving and the Eustacian tubes to drain.
I have used tea tree oil directly into the painful ear w/ good results. It's better to warm it up a bit first, as cold oils can increase the pain and hurt very much.
Have you considered homeopathic remedies? I have used them since my children were infants w/ excellent results. Soul Doctor and Amembal on this site are excellent resources. I've used Belladonna in cases of intense left sided pain w/ a red cheek or ear and Aconite for intense, sudden, sometimes heated onset (of any illness, not just earaches) all with EXCELLENT results and no side effects. I state before you now that I believe Aconite and Belladonna saved my infant daughter's life when she contracted the meningococcemia (bacterial meningitis) that almost killed her at 12 1/2 months. You can consult Homeopathic Medicine at Home by Panos & Heimlich or Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine by Dana Ullman to get yourself started. You can also buy a small children's kit w/ 6 remedies (6 of the most commonly used), to get yourself started on this path.

Earache is common in kids than in adults. There may be temporary hearing loss in some people at the time of infection or soon after the infection. If the frequency of infections increases there may be chances for permanent hearing loss.
Causes of Earache
Earache can be due to the infection in the external part of the ear like skin infection . After swimming there may be irritation and inflammation in the ear canal or external ear. It can be due to polluted water or object struck in the ear. The infection of external ear is called Otitis externa.
Otitis Media is the ear infection of the ear drum or middle ear. It is usually seen in kids of six months to two years of age. In Otitis Media fluid gets accumulated and develops pressure behind the eardrum. This causes the pain.
