I have got high cholesterol and am wondering if there are any effective natural remedies that can reduce cholesterol instead of taking medication.
Hi,
Eating whole, nutritious foods is an effective natural way to have a healthy body. One fruit in particular that can really help is blueberries! Research has shown that it can reduce cholesterol among other things. Check out this article for more information: http://www.organic-home-online.com/blueb erry-antioxidant.html .
Bee pollen has also been shown to have positive effects on your cardiovascular system which would effect cholesterol levels, I would think.
Generally, eating a diet full of whole fruits and vegetables and eliminating processed foods will go a long way toward restoring your health. Also, if you are suffering from health problems right now, you might want to think about supplementing with a whole food vitamin supplement until you get better.

I appreciate all previous answers.
Just add:
The best natural remedy for high cholesterol is walk, if doctor has not stopped you from walk.
Reason:
When you start walking it is glucose of the body which start utilizing. Depending on your speed, it takes about 15 to 25 minutes to fully utilize your blood glucose.
Still continuing with the walk will require energy to be released from stored fats in your body. The chemicals coming out of the glands for converting fats to energy also act on cholesterol. As much you walk cholesterol keeps on burning.
In view of above it is advised that you must walk at least 30 to 40 minutes.
I have found many persons, including my family members and blood relations, who normally walk twice a day for 40 to 60 minutes and they have been successful in avoiding a bypass operation.
We have learnt that besides taking statins thereare some natural remedies for lowering cholesterol levels and one of them is taking bittergourd juice. Has anyone tried it and found success? Is there anything else that we can take naturally to reduce the high cholesterol levels?
You might want to take a look at www.healthforwellness.net or www.switchtosuccess.com/meghan. I have found great supplements that are helpful for a number of different health challenges and certainly lowering cholesterol levels. You'll be able to see success stories from other people. I have taken this for overall health and love it!

I Googled the statin drugs and was so scared by the side effects that I chose an alternative method of lowering my cholesterol by diet alone. I'm giving it 90 days, so in another month I'll get a follow-up lipids profile and will know whether it's working, but I have no doubt that it will help.
In the meantime, while I am NOT prescribing, here are some of the things I am doing to lower serum cholesterol.
- oatmeal, with added wheat & oat bran (1 T.) Whole grains and bran combine with cholesterol and remove it from the body.
- lecithin, available at natural foods stores. I add a T. to my oatmeal. Lecithin breaks up fats (that's why it's in ice cream etc.)
- cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. in my oatmeal and anywhere else I can add it. Research suggests that it is instrumental in lowering serum cholesterol.
- blueberries, 1/2 C/day.
- almonds, 1 handful/day.
- garlic
- I also take Vitamin C and fish oil capsules routinely. Don't know whether they have any specific effects on cholesterol.
Finally, avoid all fatty foods. This includes fast foods, fried convenience/frozen foods, foods fried at home (broil instead, or sauté in olive oil). Remove chicken skin. Trim all visible fat from steaks and chops. Eliminate margarine (it's a trans fat, more deadly than animal fats) and use butter sparingly.
This is not rocket science. The info is available on the Web. Don't take my word - do some research yourself.

Using Herbs to Lower Cholesterol: Guggal is a Powerful Herb that ...
In the early 1960s, Indian researchers discovered an ancient Sanskrit medical text that appeared to describe the symptoms and treatment of high cholesterol. The text also described the treatment of these disorders with the plant Commiphora mukal, or guggal, a small, thorny plant distributed throughout India. Guggul and gum guggulu are the names given to a yellowish resin contained in the stem of the tree.
Guggulsterone, an active principle isolated from guggul's gum resin, received regulatory approval in India in 1987 and is used to treat a range of conditions including obesity, lipid disorders, arthritis and artery disease. More recently, it has received approval as a cholesterol-lowering drug. Guggulsterone is believed to exert influence on the production of cholesterol in humans. Nutritional supplements containing extracts of guggul gum have become popular in many Western countries.
