My daughter is 6 years old now but since she started school the teachers have been telling me she has adhd. The first year I didn't do anythign about it. The second year The teacher still pushed it so I brought her to a pediatrician who sjust basically medicated her right away without any testing. I took her off the drug because things were not improving after a few months. I recently went to see a different pediatrician and received the same diagnosis that she has adhd. I have been researching it as much as I can but I still have mixed feelings. I went today to see a naturopath to get her blood analyzed. I was amazed at what she told me, without me even telling her why I brought her there in the first place. She was able to tell me what was going on in her body and what would be affected by it. she recomended some supplements and a body cleanse. has anyone else tried this for their child and has it helped???
This will be a bit long, but I'll try to give you my best understanding on the problem since it seems like information would be appreciated :P
Hope you find this helpful!
ADD is a relatively recent phenomena that has been getting progressively worse. Those critical of the conventional approach towards the condition believe the following may be true;
The condition is overdiagnosed by zealous psycologist (the reasons for this are debated, they include payments from drug companies)
A lot of previously normal behavior (ie. boys naturally don't like to sit down at a desk all day long), is now considered a mental problem. Some people claim this is linked to the fact the new model of schooling wants to process students into mindless workers for an industrial system, hence previous indepenedent habits that prevent toiling in a factory all day long are not acceptable.
Environmental pollution causes it (ie. food additives were shown irrefutably by a UK government study to cause learning problems including ADD).
The nature of our current society creates it. For instance the rapidly changing stimuli on TV (one thing is only focused on for a few seconds before the next one is jumped to) causes a child's attention span to be conditioned to be very short.
Regardless of the cause though, the biggest opposition towards the ritalin treatment is the fact that the stuff is an amphetamine (ie. think of methamphetamine aka crystal meth). A lot of the effects of ritalin mirror those of fairly bad drugs, and I know quite a few people raised on ritalin, who are for lack of a better term fucked up and disfunctional.
An old tactic (I never did it but I had friends that did) for doing well on important exams which were not primarily memory based and timed was to take cocaine or speed before the test. Ritalin has now become a much popular drug for this approach. The state of mind you go into can be useful occasionaly for situations like that, but forcing continually on the nervous system just messes it up, strains it, makes you completely dependent on the drugs, and puts you into a completely unnatural/abnormal state of mind.
I have heard of a few people who have seen naturopaths successfully (as another poster mentioned, naturopaths only count in states that accredit them, in other places the title is almost worthless) to treat it. I would advise looking into that before you tried anything else.
Quick aside on Kalos.
He goes on here, and gives a brief flame (slander) to anything to do with an alternative medicine practice. Once that flame has been made, some responds and points out why it's false, and then Kalos edits his post to write a long tirade and flaming whoever claimed that.
I would estimate this has happened over 100 times, just ignore him.
6000000 school children are being administered Ritalin and other psychiatric drugs. ADHD is a catch all label and creativity should not be ...
I have friends who have been told that drugs are the absolute only way to control behavioral and physical characteristics in their child.
The term "ADHD" is simply a label used to categorise a list of psychosocial traits that Psychiatry considers to be improper or abnormal in society. Psychiatry defines these traits as a "mental illness", and promotes it as a "disease" that requires "treatment".
It is not a "disease", despite claims or implications made by certain psychiatric or pharmaceutical organisations. There is NO credible scientific evidence that shows the existence of what constitutes "ADHD" as a biological/neurological disorder, brain abnormality or "chemical imbalance".
"For a disease to exist there must be a tangible, objective physical abnormality that can be determined by a test such as, but not limited to, blood or urine test, X-Ray, brain scan or biopsy. All reputable doctors would agree: No physical abnormality, no disease. In psychiatry, no test or brain scan exists to prove that a 'mental disorder' is a physical disease. Disingenuous comparisons between physical and mental illness and medicine are simply part of psychiatry's orchestrated but fraudulent public relations and marketing campaign." Fred Baughman, MD., Neurologist & Pediatric Neurologist.
"Chemical imbalance…it’s a shorthand term really, it’s probably drug industry derived… We don’t have tests because to do it, you’d probably have to take a chunk of brain out of someone - not a good idea." Dr. Mark Graff, Chair of the Committee of Public Affairs for the American Psychiatric Association. July, 2005.
Such behavioural characteristics that Psychiatry created this unscientific "disease" from are, and always have been, generally considered "normal". Now, it seems, inattention or "hyperactivity" (Hyperactivity means 'excessively active'* -- what is excessive? On whose authority?? It's ridiculous!!) is abnormal, a "mental illness".

"We are not "overdrugging" or misdiagnosing" ADHD. ADHD is a total, 100 percent fraud. The many millions of schoolchildren around the world who are being drugged have no disease." Fred Baughman, Jr., M.D. Child Neurologist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.
"Parents are seldom told that Ritalin is ‘speed’—that it is pharmacologically classified with amphetamines, has the same effects, side effects, and risks. Yet this is well-known in the profession...." Dr. Peter R. Breggin & Ginger Ross Breggin, The War Against Children, P. 84.
"...But because ADD is so vaguely defined, even for a psychiatric disorder, it is tailor-made for bogus claims. There are, as the American Psychiatric Association’s latest diagnostic manual concedes, "no laboratory tests that have been established as diagnostic" for "Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder." Richard E. Vatz, Professor, Towson State University, "Attention Deficit Delirium," The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 1994
"The diagnosis of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is entirely subjective… There is no test. It is just down to interpretation… The lines between an ADD sufferer and a healthy exuberant kid can be very blurred." Dr. Joe Kosterich. Chairman of the Australian Medical Association. Sydney Morning Herald.

Calms hyperactive children with attention problems
Homeopathic remedy relieves hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsiveness in children with attention problems
Improves concentration so kids can focus
I just answered a similar question. A Good diet is very important! FATTY ACIDS! Very important. Studies have shown that fish is really brain food. Fatty acid supplements for children are the best. My friend's kids take them, and it prevented one of her kids from having to take medications. The hardest part is finding a good way to get it in a child when feeding fish regularely or giving fish oil tablets is hard. I can provide more info and some links if you'd like. There are gummies out there that taske great and your child should like. I read a study from england which suggested that giving omega 3 and 6 fatty acids actually helped kids focus in school and read better!
I am almost sure that my son has ADHD and I am researching around for any natural rememdies and am against giving children drugs to sedate them. I came across Focus Formula by The Native Remedies - www.nativeremedies.com and was wondering if anyone had heard or knows anything about it. Or if you used it how is it?
DHA, Fish oils and try this focus formula by Enzymatic Therapy:
http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx ?c=1&pid=2229&at=0
It's a direct link. You will read the ingredients and then click the "product review" tab and see what other parents think of the supplement when they give it to their children. It's highly rated.
You'll save 35% at that website and if you use this iHerb referral code HAW031 (discount coupon) at check out and they will take $5 off your first order which means you will only pay $7.97 instead of $19,95 for 60 caps! Cool, huh?! =)
iHerb ship super fast for only $1.99 (or free over $60) and as you'll see most their remedies are discounted over 40% in some cases so you might want to stock up on whatever you use a lot! ♥
EDIT: I forgot: ADHD is often caused by toxic metals such as lead or mercury poisoning so you might want to get your son tested but only go with the 24hr urine test to determine that. The blood work is always false negatives, a waste of money! If your son has mercury/silver dental fillings consider having them removed. It might also come from vaccines that contained thimerosal. Detox would be good if he tests positive. Good luck!!!
If so, what did you use and was it effective for your child?
There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn't really looked at closely for this, but I wasn't surprised it would help when I thought about it. The EPA and DHA in Fish Oil help with all sorts of things including heart health, skin health, and brain health.
Give it a try... it's economical, safe, and easy. Just make sure that the company you get it from uses Molecular Distillation because that's currently the only safe way to remove any trace contaminants of any heavy metals. Of course, if you aren't sure about the dosage or the benefits, you may want to consult with a holistic doctor, as they may have other additional options available to them.

ADD Vs ADHD - Differences Between Attention Defecit Disorder ADD ...
This topic causes a lot of confusion and one of the reasons is that, up until fairly recently, the two were considered to be the same thing.
Before 1987, the term ADD was used to describe people who had a difficult time concentrating, keeping still and focusing, among other symptoms. In that year, ADD was renamed as ADHD and this longer term was broken down into the following three categories:
1) Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive type
2) Predominantly Inattentive Type
3) Combined Type
The second category (Predominantly Innattentive Type) is what we now refer to as ADD. Its symptoms include concentration and listening problems, difficulty in following conversations, and losing, misplacing and/or forgetting things regularly.
