I'm 17 weeks pregnant and I'm sick. =( My son brings home every germ he possibly can from preschool and I caught a bad one! My doc put me on an antibiotic and an inhaler. I still feel crummy though. If anyone knows any natural remedies for cough or congestion or sore throat I would love to hear about them. (I'm really trying to avoid taking a lot of over the counter meds). Thanks!
ps. I'm putting this is the Pregnancy section vs. the Health section because I want to know what other moms have done before. Not just the average Joe.
Take a hot shower. Drink an herbal tea such as mint, chamomile, or warm lemon water. Run a humidifier, if you don't have one you will want one when baby arrives! For bad congestion, Vicks makes an herbal rub for infants (works just as well for adults with less stink!). Suck on hard candy or vit. C drops for your sore throat. Saline nose drops will help clear your nose. Hope you feel better soon!
Mix a natural cold remedy that combines garlic, lemon, honey and ginger to reduce bacteria, fever and stuffy noses. Use other natural ...
Hi- my 10 month old daughter has a cold (Stuffy Nose and Congestion). We're going through the usual steps (Humidifier, Saline Drops, Nasal Aspirator, Steam Shower). Does anyone have suggestions in terms of natural remedies that have worked for your child? Thanks.
I found that a humidifier; baby vicks on their chest, back, and bottom of their feet; and tylenol only if fever gets high, helped my son to feel better until it was over.

I have a little cold sore on the corner of my mouth and I was looking for something natural to help to speed up the process. I've used Abberva before and it didn't help at all so please don't suggest OTC or drug store medicines. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Toothpaste is a good treatment for external applications (which will take a while to see the results), but you could also take L-Lysine (an Amino Acid) to help fight it internally, too. L-Lysine can help to get rid of it sooner, plus you can take it safely after you can't see the sore anymore to make sure it's gone.
Also, if you get cold sores on a regular basis, taking L-Lysine can actually help prevent them from coming up again. Oh, and stress tends to aggravate cold sores, so reducing stress may help as well. Good luck!
I woke up last night with a cough and then woke up this morning with a cold. I'm 5 1/2 months pregnant so what are some natural remedies for getting through a cold. I'm okay with taking a cough drop every three hours but I'd like some tips on congestion in the nose and throat. I also have a 13mo old that I'm with throughout the whole day so I'm restricted from steaming for a while or taking a warm bath unfortunately.
Any tips?
Set up the Vicks Vaporizer in your room at night. That'll help w/ the congestion and it's not like you're applying Vicks directly to your body. For a sore throat, try hot tea w/ lemon and honey. I've been drinking plain (no sugar, milk) hot green tea and my throat is feeling much better. Tea is loaded w/ antioxidants so that helps combat any illnesses and it's healthy for you. Adding milk or sugar will diminish the antioxidants, so you want to drink it plain (w/ the exception of the honey & lemon combo). OJ or any juices or fruits loaded w/ vitamin C will help boost your immune system. Hope that helps! You can google "safe medications during pregnancy" and that'll bring up a huge list of websites that tell you what's ok and what isn't.
