Does anyone know any home remedies for dogs who have asthma or allergies?

i have a beagle-mix. she is about 11 years old. she has problems w/ her breathing. sometimes she has "weezing attacks" water doesnt seem to help. when she is sleeping she breathes very heavy and it seems she is having trouble breathing. she has done this for a while now, but we were living somewhere else and she didnt do it there but now that we are home again she does. she is an indoor/outdoor dog. if anyone knows what could be causing this or anything that might help, please let me know. besides of course taking her to the vet. any kind of natural remedies or medicine or something. thanks.

treat the dog as if it were a child...get an air purifier in the home to free the air of allergens; also, make sure your home is a smoke-free enviroment, as that can really set off the dog's asthma....also, some vets tell dog owners to buy claritin or benadryl (over-the-counter) to help their pets with their allergies....talk to your vet about that option. it sounds crazy but i've seen it all before...prozac puppies and claritin kitties!

What natural home remedies can I use to improve my dog's dry & Flaky coat?

I had recently switched her food with bad results. Now her skin is dry and flaky. I have taken her off the new food, but am looking for natural home remedies that I can use to improve her coat condition.

Having dry flaky skin when changing foods can be normal, especially when going from a lower quality to a higher quality food. Your dog's body is "detoxifying" which could cause the coat/skin changes until the dog's body becomes acclimated to the new food. You should give the new food a few weeks before writing it off. Also, don't switch cold turkey. Always mix more old food with new, and then slowly less old food and more new food until you are feeding only the new food. That will help with the transition and also alleviate diarrhea problems.

You can give your dog a boiled egg, or purchase the supplement for skin and coat that you can pump on to the dogs food to help with the dryness and flaking.

Hope this helps!

Are there any home remedies for keeping dogs off your lawn? I heard about ammonia and water. Need Help.?

I don't want to hurt the animals, but I want to stop them for using my lawn as their bathroom. If no natural home remedies any suggestions on good but reasonable cost store remedies?

Dogs Hate Mothballs

I have had good luck with mothballs. Dogs hate the smell. I put them around trees and in the flowerbeds.

Discourage Them with Potatoes

Semi-rotting potatoes discourage dogs from coming around.

A Gardener's Approach

You can use cayenne and red pepper mix. The strong smell deters them. I have seen the exact recipe on several gardening websites.

Claim Victory with Vinegar

I read that if you spray the edge of your yard with vinegar, it would deter dogs/cats from coming into your yard. After a few weeks, they will remember that awful smell and bypass your yard. You have to re-spray after a rain.
Linda

Give Ammonia a Try

I know that you can use Ammonia on your trash to keep nosey dogs out. Perhaps it would help keep the neighborhood animals away. I'm not sure if this is completely "harmless." Surely the animals won't lick at something that smells that putrid.

Spice Up Their Lives

I have heard that Cayenne Pepper works. I haven't tried this myself, as I don't have dogs or neighbor's dogs that do this type of damage. Apparently, you simply sprinkle the Cayenne Pepper around the area they have gone and they won't return to the same spot. To deter them from doing so in the first place, you could sprinkle a border of Cayenne Pepper to prevent them from crossing onto your lawn.

Send Them Sneezing

I have used ground black pepper to keep dogs, cats and skunks away from my house and garden. One sniff of the pepper will send them running off sneezing. Next time, they will leave without marking your property.

A Unique Message

This will sound strange, but adult male human urine has hormones in it that repels other mammals. It makes use of the fact that males mark territory with urine. Such marking is taken as a "do not trespass" message. It will also deter rabbits, deer, etc. And odds are very high that the older man you knew was well aware of this fact but was too embarrassed to share his "secret."
Debbie

Spray the Critters

You might try a motion-activated sprinkler that sprays with full garden hose pressure. It's called the Scarecrow. Do an Internet search with the words "scarecrow," "spray," and "motion" and you will find several online places that sell it.

I'm assuming you've tried talking with the owners if you can identify them. I think it's very irresponsible of them and gives pet owners a bad reputation. They should have fenced yards for their pets.
Diane

Call the Dog Catcher

Isn't there a leash law where you live? Call the dog catcher. Why should you have to put potentially harmful chemicals in your yard? It is the dog owner's responsibility to control their animal.

I have three dogs. They don't roam around to kill other peoples' grass, get in the trash, or possibly bite someone.

A Tried and True Remedy

I've got a tried and true remedy for dogs using your lawn as their personal privy. Fill gallon jugs with water. Place them around the perimeter of your yard, every 3' or so. Your neighbors will ask you what the jugs are for and you can tell them that you're sick and tired of dogs messing up your yard and you heard that this would do the trick. It worked for me.

Spray Listerine on Lawn

You can spray Listerine on the lawn or bitter apple. Listerine works better as some dogs actually like bitter apple. You can buy generic or store brand since the name brand is expensive.

"Dog-B-Gone" Tonic

According to Jerry Baker, "America's Master Gardener," in his book Green Grass Magic, if a dog urinates on your lawn, water it immediately to dilute the urine and minimize the damage. He also gives a recipe for his "Dog-B-Gone Tonic" which contains:

2 cloves garlic
2 small onions
1 jalapeno pepper
1 T. cayenne pepper
1 T. Tabasco sauce
1 T. chili powder
1 T. liquid dish soap
1 qt. warm water

Chop up the garlic and onions and combine all ingredients. Let it sit for 24 hours, strain through cheesecloth, and then sprinkle on the areas that you want dogs to keep away from.

Is there a natural home remedy for dog urine killing the grass?

There are many home remedies to correct this problem, but most of them are ineffective and a few of them actually make the situation worse.

Before you start implementing changes to correct lawn burn, you need to make sure that your dog is actually the culprit. Several lawn diseases will look like lawn burn, with the small, characteristic brown patches. First, make sure that the brown spots are in areas where your dog urinates. Most dogs will have an area in the yard that they choose to use as the 'bathroom.' Secondly, make sure that the grass in the brown spots is still firmly attached. Grab a handful and give it a steady pull. If the grass is firmly rooted, then it points to lawn burn. If the whole bunch of grass pulls up, roots and all, then you may be dealing with a grub problem. And thirdly, make sure that your dog is the problem. If your neighbor's dog is coming into your yard and creating the problem it will not do any good to treat your own dog.

The cause of lawn burn

Lawn burn is caused by the nitrogen in dog urine. Because dog urine is very high in nitrogen, when the dog urinates, it is similar to pouring liquid fertilizer on the lawn. A little fertilizer is good for the grass, but an excess causes nitrogen burn. The prevention of lawn burn deals with trying to reduce the amount of nitrogen coming into contact with the grass.

Contributing factors

There are several contributing factors that increase the likelihood of developing lawn burn.

*

Female dogs are more likely to cause lawn burn than males because they void their entire bladder in one location instead of lifting their leg and marking, like males.
*

Large dogs deposit more urine so they increase the quantity of nitrogen in one location, making lawn burn more likely.
*

Those dogs, usually young active dogs, fed a high protein diet are more likely to produce a urine that causes lawn burn.
*

Heavily fertilized yards are already receiving near maximum levels of nitrogen. The small amount of nitrogen in dog urine may be all that is needed to put these lawns over the edge and cause lawn burn.
*

Lawns that are stressed are more susceptible to damage. Lawns that are suffering from drought, disease, or are newly sodded or seeded are more susceptible to lawn burn.

Solving the problem

Successfully treating and preventing lawn burn often requires a multi-step approach.

1.

Saturate the urinated spots with water. After the pet urinates, pour several cupfuls of water on the spot to dilute the urine.
2.

Feed a high quality dog food that does not exceed the pet's protein requirement. High quality foods have more digestible protein sources that are more completely utilized by the pet and create less nitrogenous waste in the urine.
3.

Encouraging your dog to drink more, will help dilute the urine and decrease the risk of lawn burn. Small amounts of non-salted broth in the drinking water may help increase your dog's water intake.
4.

Train your dog to urinate in a location that is less visible. This approach is very effective for some owners that do not want to add supplements to their dogs' diet.
5.

Replant your yard with more urine-resistant grasses. The most resistant grasses tend to be perennial ryegrasses and fescues. The most sensitive tend to be Kentucky bluegrass and Bermuda.
6.

Feed your dog a supplement like Drs. Foster and Smith Lawn Guard, or apply a product to the lawn such as Dogonit Lawn Treatment. These products bind and neutralize the nitrogen in your pet's urine.
7.

Reduce the stress on your lawn by not over- or under-fertilizing and by providing frequent watering.
8.

If neighbors' dogs are causing the problem, you may advise your neighbors of the leash laws. Using a fence or motion-activated sprinkler may be helpful in keeping these dogs off of your lawn.

Brown spots created by lawn burn are not a medical threat to your dog, however, they can be unsightly and potentially expensive to repair. By understanding the cause of these spots, and then making a few changes, you should be able to give your dog full range of the yard and still enjoy a trouble-free lawn.
