I had to go to the e.r. becaue I was having really sharp pains that made me afraid for my baby. I was so embarrased by the end of the visit, they told me it ws just constipation! Sorry if TMI, but I need some suggestions. I tried the warm milk and was a no go for me:(
I'm guessing everyone is going to tell you prunes.... which will do the trick, however you might not love the taste. A good alternative to the prunes, is to buy some ripe plums from the produce department at your grocery store...... prunes are actually just dried plums, but the plums taste better and still have the natural laxitive qualities in them.
Another easy option, is to eat oatmeal. It's handy too because it doesn't upset your stomach, and it comes in a million different flavors these days. There are even low sugar flavored ones as well if you're worried about overloading on sweet stuff. A bowl of oatmeal each day should help you get "regulated".
Otherwise..... taking a stool softener helps TONS! The softeners don't give you the runs like a laxative will.... but they just help things stay softer and easier to pass when you do go. They are perfectly safe during pregnancy, if taken according to the normal dosage directions.

OH... and whatever you do, try not to strain when you do go.... trust me when I say the hemmorroids are WAY worse than the constipation!! =o)

The best way to relief constipation in the shortest time are the following:
Home remedies
- Eat a medium-sized pear after dinner or with breakfast.
- Drink a glass of hot water with sour lime juice and half a teaspoon of salt.
- Swallow a teaspoon of linseed with water before each meal.
- Eat a slide of raw papaya early in the morning.
- Take 3 small beets, scrub them, clean and eat them raw in the morning.
Natural treatment
Change diet.
It is important to increase the amount of fiber in the diet with raw fruits and vegetables, brown wild rice, flaxseeds, bran and whole grain cereals.
Add exercise.
Exercise such as walking, swimming and jogging, can help regulate the bowels. It can be as simple as walking 20 minute every morning of evening.
Keep hydrated.
People who suffer from constipation are usually dehydrated. For that reason, it is important to drink 6-8 glasses of water daily.
Check medications.
Some medications cause constipation. Check with your physician.
Be aware of laxatives.
It is better to avoid laxatives. It can cause more problems with constipation because create habit can cause, in addition, diarrhea, bloating, dehydration and damage to the intestinal lining.
It is important to go to the bathroom as soon as the person feel the urge and never hold in a bowel movement because this contribute to have constipation

Typically when you get a stomach virus, the doctors just tell you to let it take it's course. However, what do you do when you are constipated in addition to the stomach virus and you can't move the virus out through your bowels?
I am looking for some natural home remedies if anyone has one. I prefer not to take any pharmaceuticals.

Besides being an RN, I have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can mimic the symptoms you describe. Typically, nausea, sometimes frequent vomiting, and the constipation. Sound familiar?
I try to eat applesauce, toast, rice, jello, soft foods, for 2-3 days until most of the symptoms go away, then I work on the constipation. I like prunes and I have a serving, about 5, twice a day. If prunes aren't your thing try Milk of Magnesia (MOM), or an herbal pill that has prunes in it.
But please note: a poop blockage in the bowel can cause the same nausea and vomiting. If you have any abdominal pain, do not take a laxative like MOM....in the process of clearing, it can rupture your bowel! That requires surgical repair and several days in a hospital and then 6 weeks at home to heal.
If you have any concerns, contact your doctor. a simple pressing on the abdomen can usually solve the question.
