I have used products from my vet for fleas, however would like to use something natural instead. What are the best combinations of herb or essential oils to use?
brewers yeast is a good flea repelent and cedar chips
A natural flea treatment for puppies involves the use of a natural shampoo containing Neem oil, which should be applied above the spine. Find out ...
i did hear you could give garlic to discourage dog fleas, how much should you give them and does anyone know how safe it is - i did hear onions can give dogs leukemia. My doggie is an affenpinscher - around 6 kilos
Garlic is not good for her either, but it's not as toxic as onions, which can cause anemia. Takes more garlic to hurt her, but it still can. There are better alternatives for flea control.

Is there a such thing as natural flea remedies for dog and cats. I dont like the idea of putting chemicals on my pets. Is there another way?
I went through the same dilemma as you and have tried just about everything. The first thing to tell you is that nothing natural works instantly. If you are looking for a quick solution you will not find it. However there are a few great products that you can buy that can work.
Many people find it hard to believe that changing the pets to a natural high quality food will help eliminate a flea problem, but it is the first step.
Supplements are.. imported brewers yeast (one tablespoon per day to 50 lbs) or one teaspoon to an adult cat or small dog. Adding a chopped clove of garlic or garlic oil to the food since garlic also helps remove the threat of tapeworms.
If your pets are experiencing flea dermatitis adding Vit B1 or Oil of Evening Primrose to the diet will be beneficial.
citrus Oil is an excellent product and can be mixed in water and a spray bottle with a squirt on the dog or cat every now and again. (You can make your own with Oranges, Lemons, grapefruit etc and boil them down in a large pot). Citronella can be extremely toxic to cats and de'limonene has been found to cause nerve damage.
In your home treat places like the window sill (if you have a cat) and book cases. For your garden you can use a mixture of 1/2 and 1/2 beer and dish soap applied to the lawn with a hose sprayer. Or you can use the citrus mixture if you decide to make it yourself, or you can buy Diatomaceous Earth at the hardware store. Make sure you buy the bleached form used in swimming pool fileters - inexpensive but highly effective. - this will take about 3 weeks to be completely effective but will last a long time. Kills off all forms of flea cycle.
The only thing that works is persistance. Good luck

Add garlic to the dog's diet. It is a natural flea repellant. Also make a solution of water and peppermint and spray the dog regularly with it. Fleas HATE mint.
I don't use frontline any more on my dog. Also it is too toxic for my cat and her skin erupts when it is used on her.
Frontline, Advantix, Revolution etc are best, but Diatomaceous earth can work for keeping fleas away after initial treatment. It is most effective if used in your yard rather than on your dog. See info below....
There is a ton of info out there on D.E. just look it up on google. There are many sites that sell it specifically for ranchers and pet owners.
But the bottom line is the chemicals work best!
From Wikipedia:
Diatomaceous earth (also known as DE, diatomite, diahydro, kieselguhr, kieselgur and Celite) is a naturally occurring, soft, chalk-like sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. This powder has an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and is very light, due to its high porosity.
Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. It is used as a filtration aid, as a mild abrasive, as a mechanical insecticide, as an absorbent for liquids, as cat litter, as an activator in blood clotting studies, and as a component of dynamite. As it is also heat-resistant, it can be used as a thermal insulator.
Pest control
Diatomite is also used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the cuticle, the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. Beekeepers are apparently experimenting with it, to keep small hive beetles from breeding. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans. It is most commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and eventually eliminate a cockroach infestation

I took the big leap this summer and am using only natural flea control on Gracie, my wonderful dog, instead of the horrible spot-on pesticides that the EPA is investigating. Every summer I start out using natural products until July hits and the fleas here in the South get out of control. Then, reluctantly, I would put Frontline on my dogs because it was the only thing that worked. But not this summer. I’ll never use those products again. Ever.
Using only natural products for flea control, Gracie does have a few fleas and does itch more than she used to on Frontline. And it’s a lot more time-consuming for me to flea comb and spray everyday but I truly believe it’s worth the effort. To me, it’s really not even a choice. Gracie is going through chemotherapy right now for a growth on her tongue and in her brain. She’s already gone through surgery and radiation and there is no way that I would put any pesticide on her when her immune system is already being pushed to the max. Why I thought it was ever OK to put poison on my dogs is a question I keep asking myself.
