My 3 1/2 year old woke up with a bad cough this morning (sounds kinda phlegmy) I don't want to give him medicine since doctors now recommend not to; so does anybody know of anything I can give him that would help?
dip a spoon in honey, then sprinkle some ginger on it. Get him to put it into his mouth, with the bottom of the spoon up and suck in it. It's helped my cough in the past and the honey has antibacerial properties.
Hope he feels better soon!
Also get him to drink a lot of orange juice. If the phlegm gets bad you can get a hot shower going and have him sit in the bathroom with the door closed to breath in the condensation-it should help loosen things up.

Great tasting Natural honey
At this time of year my daughter always takes such a bad cough and cold, but I hate giving her medication every four hours (ie paracetamol and cough medicine), so I was just wondering if there was anything more natural that I could use. Her temperature is always very high and she coughs so bad that she makes herself sick, I have been to the doctors in the past and all they offer me is more paracetamol, more cough bottle and anti-biotics if it goes on too long. Thanks in advance for any help.
Vit C is a great antiviral. Take 2-3 times daily - spread out since Vit C is a water soluble vitamin and your body will excrete excess. They make children's chewables which will be an appropriate dosage.
Mullein tea is great for respiratory anything. You can find it at your health food store or online at http://www.iherb.com (not affiliated, just like their service) Steep tea for 5-8 minutes. We used it to calm my daughter's cough when she contracted whooping cough (and yes, she was vaccinated, which is why we no longer vaccinate). Sounds like your daughter gets a very bad cough, this will help, and the kids like the taste, especially with honey added. Honey is very good for colds.
Other good teas - Lemon, chamomile, peppermint.
Don't forget to add honey to your tea. Honey is a great anti EVERYTHING. Very beneficial. My daughter actually took just a tsp of honey straight last time she started to get a cold. She didn't complain about the cold again.
Garlic is also good. We make it into a butter (1 tbsp melted butter - 1 clove or more garlic crushed into butter) We spread it on bread and grill it (don't toast, butter might ignite) or we put it on our favorite pasta. Some just pop a garlic clove, but we like the flavor :-)
Steam always helps clear things out and relieve congestion.
Lots of liquids. We also add 1 tsp of vinegar to apple juice. Vinegar (apple cider not white) is a great natural way to help your body deal with illness. It is okay in other juices, but tastes best in apple we think.
If she gets quite congested and are concerned about infection, get some Grapefruit Seed Extract (also available at your health food store or iHerb) Make sure you get grapeFRUIT not grape seed extract. Put 10 drops in 6 oz of water and gargle for soar throat or swallow for other concerns. If you think ear or sinus infection, you can use it as diluted drops. My son-in-law was seen by an ER doc and told he had an ear infection. He declined the antibiotic prescription and used the GSE drops instead. We use it for throat infections also.
If the congestion is making you very uncomfortable, get some Robitussin PE (PE only, other formulations have too much in them you don't need). It and aspirin are the only OTC meds we do. It will help with the congestion by thinning the mucus so it can drain and keep out of your lungs also.
Finally, NO refined sugars. They are immune system suppressants and will counteract any good you are trying to do. If giving her juices make the 100% and watch out for high fructose corn syrup.

Is there a natural cough remedy for a child as young as 2 y/o? My daughter has a cough, and she keeps waking up from it. She even coughed so much she threw up, once, already tonight. I really hate to give her over the counter things, but she is miserable. Halp!
There are several safe herbs that will dry up the phlegm (if she is throwing up, she probably has a lot of phlegm) and stop the cough, but the best is Mullein tea, and you can find it in any health food store. Plus, it does not taste bad.
My 7 month old has raspy breathing, cough, and a lot of mucus. I took him to the doctor a few days ago and she said he's fine, I just need to let him cough it out for a few days. My problem is, I can't stand listening to him gurgle his breath while I wait for him to start coughing. Once he does cough a bit he sounds fine again. Any suggestions for remedies to help cut back on the mucus or get him to cough more?
You could use some vicks on his chest - they also have some wall plug in things now that really help- it has the menthol on a pad that you plug into the wall. They don't give you medicine at this age, but use a cold humidifier and run the shower - let it get nice and steamy and take him in there several times a day (don't put him in the shower, just sit on the toilet or floor holding him.
You aren't supposed to give them honey until they are 1, but studies have shown that a teaspoon of honey for a small kid or a couple tablespoons of honey for an adult does better than most cough syrups. So if you are feeling brave - you just give it to him on a spoon - The reason you're not supposed to is botchulism (sp) poisoning, though, so I'm not suggesting it, but keep the honey in the back of your mind for later.
ALSO you could give him warm apple juice - there is something in the apple juice (same with honey) that makes your throat secrete stuff that loosens the mucus and helps with it.
I hated it when my baby was sick - and freaked out every time, but now he's 16 months old and has a stuffy nose half the time and you will get used to it.
OH, I FORGOT THE BEST THING THAT HELPED - I let him sleep on my chest while i was proped up on the couch - being elevated instead of lying flat really really helped!

A Tasty, All-Natural Remedy for Cough | HealthMad
Are you experiencing an annoying cough that keeps you awake at night? Unfortunately, over-the-counter cough syrups aren’t as effective as the advertisements would lead you to believe, and codeine-based prescription ones can make you tired and nauseous. The side effects of cough syrups are even more pronounced in children, and parents are being encouraged to avoid them completely in very young kids for safety reasons. Natural remedies for cough are usually the best tolerated, but is there one that really works? An interesting study shows that there may be a tasty and effective way to stop a cough – by sipping hot chocolate.
Chocolate: A Natural Remedy for Cough? In a study published in the FASEB Journal, researchers demonstrated the amazing ability of theobromine, a common ingredient in dark chocolate, to naturally suppress cough. To test this, they gave participants a capsule containing either codeine, theobromine, or a placebo. The participants then inhaled increasing amounts of capsaicin, an ingredient in red peppers, to stimulate them to cough. The results? When they were given theobromine capsules, the participants needed a third more capsaicin to induce cough than when they received a placebo. Surprisingly, codeine wasn’t much better than placebo for suppressing cough in this study.
