I had a cat scan done and they told me I have thickening around the colon, but I have an intense pain in the right lower quadrant. Can anyone explain this?
I thought it was obvious that I am using a doctor since I got a CAT scan, but I am working with a doctor just looking to hear another answer. Also I am only 21 years old
Thickening is a nonspecific sign of inflammation of some sort. It could be caused by inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis), infection (such as C. diff), or ischemia (poor blood flow to that region of the colon). Without further testing it's impossible to say exactly what the cause of it is, and the pain you describe could be the result of any of those inflammatory conditions as well. You'll need to call your doctor's office if you want information any more specific to what's going on with you.

My husband has been checked for Gull Bladder disease, diverticuliits and it isn't cancer. We have been through CT scans, ultrasounds and stool sample testing. What could it be? I am worried sick, and of course he can't get into the GI specialist until December.
He is only 32 and otherwise healthy.
it could be a number of things that they are trying to test for. Some of them might include: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Colitis, Crohn's Disease, Infammatory Bowel Disease, Some kind of inflammation caused by a parasite. I hope they find out soon. The list is long on things that can cause thickening in the colon.
My friend was told by a doctor that her Colon was thickning up when she went to the doctor for a bladder infection. He wanted her to come back to be checked. Her bladder infection went away so she decided she was better and decided not to go back for the check up. I told her she should go back. What does it mean when your colon is thickining??? I need to tell her so I can convince her to go back to the doctor.
yeesh...i dunno, but it doesnt sound good. if you have to, drug her and take her back. she's gotta get that checked out.

A diverticulum is an abnormal outpouching of the intestinal wall, kind of like a hernia of the intestine. When fecal material becomes trapped in the pouch, it can become inflamed, called diverticulitis. Diverticulosis is the term meaning that you have diveticula present in the intestine, which may or may not be inflamed. The descending colon passes downward to the s-shaped sigmoid colon within the left side of your abdominal cavity. The wall of the descending colon is thicker than normal (probably from inflammation), and the diverticula in the sigmoid are multiple. The mesentery is the tissue that contains the blood and lymph supply of the intestine, and it appears stranded but there are no abscesses (pus pockets) seen.
