Terminal Colon Cancer

Jan 24, 2006 I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer with mets (spread) to my liver. I was only 40 years old. I was told that I could not have my tumours removed from my liver because there were too many. My condition was terminal. The Oncologist said that if I did not do chemo I would live a year; with chemo I would last 16 mths. I did do chemo and now I am waiting for liver surgery at the end of the month. I feel great and have been off chemo since November.

The correct answer is 'they' do not know. Doctors work on averages, and the thing with colon cancer is that for 40 plus years there have not been any new drugs developed. In the past 3 - 4 years 4 drugs have been approved and are being used successfully to improve and extend life. This is the reason that I am now able to have my liver resected.

My advice is to become knowledgeable about the disease and about the treatments available even if they are in other countries. I live in Ontario, Canada and I have resorted to learning a lot from the Internet and what the US is doing. I have had to direct my own health care as the doctors here in Ontario are behind the US in knowledge of how these drugs work.

for the past 3 years she has been fighting for her life. This is genetic because her 34 year old brother lost his life to it 2 years before she was diagnosed with it leaving 3 small boys. It's hard enough thinking that someday she will possibly be gone from life and I can't imagine my world without her in it. I am a very strong person but I am having a very hard time with this. 2 weeks before her surgery my real sister died from a massive herat attack without any warning and now 2 days ago my youngest brother was also diagnosed with colon cancer and will know the extent of what he is dealing with this coming week when he goes into surgery. I quit smoking cigaretts 5 months ago and now I bought a pack and started smoking again. What the hell is wrong with me I know better. My doctor had me on cymbalta an antidepressant and now he has cut it in half to start taking me off of this drug. Do you think I need to ask my doctor to put me back on the higher dose again?

Finding the right dosage of an antidepressant is sometimes tedious, but in the end is a godsend. Cutting your dose of Cymbalta in half will likely give you little or no therapeutic value.

My mother in law stays with me, and I take care of her, but she smokes cigarettes. She been having a lot of pain, she takes percotsets like its candy, she has been havingdiarrheaa. She doesn't eat healthy....What are the signs of the end, Im just curious

Typically, terminal cancer patients stop eating & drinking and sleep more.

The important thing is that she's comfortable. If you think the percocets aren't working, talk to her doctor's office.

... seem to take a turn for the better a couple of days before they die? I'm talking about those who choose to stop chemotherapy treatment and let the cancer take its course.

Here are two examples:
My stepfather had terminal colon and liver cancer (it was advanced, so he chose not to have chemo). While he was tired most of the time, two days before he died he got up and walked around and fixed himself several TV dinners because he was real hungry.

My great-grandmother had terminal colon cancer and several days before she died, she said she felt a lot better and wanted eggnog (was not hungry or thirsty for anything months before that).

Farrah Fawcett sat up and declared she was hungry for a steak two days before she died -- and ate that steak.

This has nothing to do with their cancer diagnosis it is common among many who are dying regardless of the cause. Death is a part of life and this is part of the natural process. Just like how women will get a sudden burst of energy before they go into labor. It helps them to prepare for what is about to happen.
