My mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer 2 years ago. She is now on her last few months and I want to find something, anything that might help her stay for just a little longer. Anything helps! Trials, no gaurantees we are willing to try ANYTHING!
Stage 4 colon cancer has been researched. I was recently involved in a clinical trial using monoclonal antibodies in patient's with stage 4 colon cancer. The drug has now been approved for use and is under the name of ERBITUX. Monoclonal antibodies are becoming the new trend in treating cancers. A great website to find where some colon cancer trials are going on is at http://www.nci.gov--Good luck in your search!
Patients with stage III colon cancer treated with 5-FU-based chemotherapy after complete surgical removal of their tumor after 1995 had improved ...
I'm sorry that I can't phrase that a little bit less harsh, but I have recently found out someone that I know has stage II colon cancer. He has had surgery and is in round 2 of a six month chemo treatment. Will my friend survive? For how long?
Most cancers are measured in survival 5-year survival rates. This is the percentage of people alive 5 years after being diagnosed with the same kind and stage of cancer. Stage 2A colon cancers have a 5-year survival rate of 80% and 2B has a 75% survival rate. Long term survival depends on how well they respond to treatment. If is not uncommon for some cancers such as breast cancer or melanoma to recur 10-15 years later. This is not the case with colon cancers when they recur it is usually within 2-4 years.
ok how long does it take to get from stage 1 to stage 2 in colon cancer(and stage 2 to 3 and so on. There are 4 stages)? My father has stage 1 colon cancer and im wondering how long it takes to move along stages. And from what I have found if my father doesnt get the surgery then he has less than 90% chance of living for 5 more years? Is this true? What are the survival rates? It hasnt spread to other parts of the body yet, that we know of. He was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer about 2-3 months ago. your help is appreciated.

are these accurate?
I don't think anyone can tell you this. Talk with the doctor.
Well my 32 year old brother-in-law just got diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer ; / and I'm just completely depressed... My sister just married him about four years ago and they have a one year old daughter and a 2 year old son. They just took out a 600k loan to buy a commercial property so financially they are in a difficult situation as well. It just breaks my heart knowing that there's such a high chance they will never see their father when they are older and that my bro-in-law mightn't see his children grow up...... Also, if anyone has tried effective alternative treatments besides just the conventional methods please inform me if you can and your recovery stories would be nice as well. Thanks guys.
There are survivors for every type of cancer and at every stage of cancer. Your brother in law needs to locate an oncologist who he can trust and who specializes in this type of disease. He needs someone who will not discourage him. He needs a positive attitude, courage, and determination. He needs everyone on his side as he fights this battle.
He needs all the information that he can handle . . not outdated information. Cancer research is ongoing, papers and new treatments come out monthly . . what may have been true about a disease last year may be totally different today. Be extremely careful about what you read concerning 'statistics' as they do not apply to individuals.
Here are a few places to start the research process:

Remember, do not listen to the 'terminators', there is ALWAYS hope.
Husband starting chemo in one week. He has been operated on for colon cancer and doc said everything was taken out from colon. A PET scan was needed before he could start chemo and it now shows that it was also in the liver. Of course it is now a Stage IV cancer. Need to know how long does he really have to live if the chemo works and shrinks the liver mass so it can be operated on.
FOLFOX/Avastin is a very good therapy for advanced colon cancer and the trials that led to its approval suggest that the median survival is around 2 years. Meaning 50% of patients will live beyond that, and 50% less than that. Keep in mind, statistics are just that, statistics, there is no saying that your husband will do better than 2 years or just a few months. But odds are he will respond to therapy. In terms of liver metastatectomies, that all depends on how many lesions there are, how much they shrink, and what areas of the liver are involved.
Colon Cancer Clinical Trial: Preoperative Chemosensitivity Testing ...
The primary working hypothesis is that preoperative chemo-sensitivity testing using fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) performed before and after one course of FOLFOX (folinic acid, fluorouracil, oxaliplatin) can identify the patients that will least likely have a significant benefit from adjuvant FOLFOX for stage III colon cancer. The benefit will be analyzed by correlating the preoperative FDG-PET uptake changes to the disease free and overall survival.
