I started having pain several months ago and went on with life as usual. I'm generally healthy, exercise and try to eat right. I finally went to the doctor with this pain and he ordered blood work and a CT scan. After the scan the nurse called and told me that my colon is enlarged and refer-ed me to someone else, whom I'll see next week. I'm 33, married, three kids and freaking out! If it were cancer something would have shown up in my blood-work, right? What else could be wrong?
This just means your colon is a tad larger than normal and may just have an infection but your doctor may want you to get a colon run where they visit your colon all inside don't worry it won't hurt!!

I recently had a colonoscopy and the procedure was stopped. The Dr. said my sigmoid colon was severly enlarged and that I'd have it removed. I am waiting on a cat scan. I am a little scared. Y.W,
I am not sure this is the only implication, but an enlarged colon is not able to keep things moving because it cannot contract enough to push things through. If you have chronic constipation, than this might be the cause. Sometimes people can get by with a very high fiber diet, exercise, and and lots of fluids, but the colon can be enlarged enough that nothing works other than surgery. There may be more to it than this.
What are the causes and symptoms of an enlarged colon?
There are two main possible causes of enlarged colon:
"Toxic megacolon" is caused by acute toxic colitis with dilatation (enlargement) of the colon. This can result from ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease, or extreme, lengthy constipation. Read about toxic megacolon at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/ article/000248.htm
Hirschsprung's Disease also causes enlarged colon. In this condition, certain nerve cells that "sense" colon fullness are absent or scarce. You do not know your colon is full; there is no urge to defecate; your colon enlarges. Read about this condition at http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/uva health/peds_digest/hirschpr.cfm.
Megacolon in Cats « colectomyonline.net
This is an extremely difficult condition to treat in your cat, as in most cases the root cause never fully known and understood.
Megacolon in cats is a condition where you have your pets become extremely enlarged colon and as a result has very little mobility, and is no longer spontaneous or active. To compound this situation, your cat colon is full of feces and not in a position to publish it. It is an extremely stressful situation for your cat and can alsofrustrating for the owner.
Your cats digestive tract ends with a tubular organ which is called the colon. It has two basic functions: water and electrolytes from your pet and to extract as much as the control defecation. It acts as a storage unit for fecal material, and is continuous with the rectum. The walls of the colon contain your cats muscles, which are designed to be activated by the nerves in the spinal cord.
